Award Season

Congratulations to our clients and collaborators on a series of awards from AIA Chicago, the Chicago Athenaeum, and Architect’s Newspaper.

The Searle Visitor Center at the Lincoln Park Zoo was honored with an American Architecture award from the Chicago Athenaeum. As visitors gaze up, laser cut panels dapple sunlight, evoking the pattern of layered branches in a tree canopy. This welcoming and memorable pavilion is a gateway to the park, city, and world beyond. View the other winners at chi-athenaeum.org.

AIA Chicago transitioned its annual Design Excellence Awards to a virtual celebration. Juries narrowed 212 entries down to 39 projects. The recently completed McDonald’s Disney Flagship was honored with a Distinguished Building Citation of Merit. The jury noted: “the building is uber sustainable.” Aiming to become the world’s first net-zero energy quick service restaurant, the project has garnered headlines and helped change the mindset of what consumers think a fast food joint should look like.

The Architect’s Newspaper honors the Railyard Park with a 2020 Best of Design Award in the Unbuilt-Landscape category. Transforming a series of parking lots, a former auto mechanic garagae, and undeveloped green space into a new urban park: the Railyard design team worked through an inclusive public process that involved more than 1000 residents and city staff. Cheers to these exciting civic spaces!
